In Style June 2004: The Princess of Pop Punk Returns

Avril Lavigne may be a few years older, but she still exudes all of the sassy, youthful attitude that made her first record, Let Go, so dang catchy. On her sophomore album, Under My Skin, Avril cranks out the pop-punk jams with as much energy as ever, though with a noticably more mature outlook than she had on her previous effort.

The band's rhythm guitarist (and Avril's ex-boyfriend, Jesse Colburn) left the group a few months ago, and was replaced by Craig Wood, former bassist for Canadian punk band Gob.

Under My Skin opens with the high energy growl of "Take Me Away." Avril's vocals soar as guitars churn away, and drums pound out the solid rhythm. "Together" rocks with a slow and deliberate groove that leads up to the powerful climax of the chorus -- led by Avril's howling vocals.

Avril takes a stand on the album's relatively mellow first single, "Don't Tell Me," singing, "Get out of my head/ Get off of my bed/ Yeah, that's what I said." With jackhammer guitars and a manic rhythmic pace, Avril takes a page out of Green Day's pop-punk book on the blazing track "He Wasn't."

Other album highlights include the pop sing-a-long "My Happy Ending," and the beautifully eerie vocal melodies on "Forgotten."
