When we heard the angsty "Complicated ," from Avril Lavigne's upcoming debut disc, Let Go, we knew she had more spunk than the average navel-gazing female singer. And offstage, too, this 17-year old from Napanee, Ontario, makes her counterparts look tame: Avril quit high school to pursue music and makes no bones about having a fake ID. "I'd like to be a cop one day ; I like having authority," she says. No duh! At our shoot Avril bullies our photographer into shooting her from the angles she wants, and makes our stylist blow out her hair her way. But we don't think Avril is a brat. She's just not willing to be a manufactured pop product. -LAURA MORGAN
